I have used Kaspersky product (Internet Security) and it is the one which stayed on my laptop for the longest time. I have also tried other Security suites but they did not match up to my expectations.

D. Windows PC Protection (Kaspersky Internet Security 2013)
Be sure your Windows PC is protected with the world’s finest security. Bank, shop, surf and socialize online knowing you’re protected against all threats – even those that have yet to be discovered
Let me take you through Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 and discuss in details about it.
I used kis2013_126.96.36.19990EN_3568.exe for installation. The installation is pretty smooth and better than previous 2012 version. During installation you can opt out of KSN (Kaspersky Security Network). The installation completed in less than 120seconds, but spiked CPU usage to 90% and above. The initial run collects system data, and then presents you the activation wizard. Then I immediately went ahead and updated the database.
The main interface (see below) is very sleek and soothing to eyes. It provides a quick status on Threats, Protection Modules, Update and License information.
The flip option on the main interface provide easy access to Scan, Update, Safe Money, Parental Control, Applications Activity, Network Monitor, Quarantine and Tools.
The newly introduced “Cloud protection” enables immediate reaction (protection) on new threats through KSN. According to Kaspersky:
Kaspersky Security Network (KSN) is an infrastructure of online services that provides access to the online Kaspersky Lab Knowledge Base, which contains information about the reputation of files, web resources, and software. Using data from the Kaspersky Security Network ensures a faster response time for Kaspersky Internet Security when encountering new types of threats, improves performance of some protection components, and reduces the risk of false positives.
The Tools section of KIS provides following self-explanatory functionalities:
Kaspersky Rescue Disk
Microsoft Windows Troubleshooting
The overall settings in KIS are divided into 4 parts:
A. Protection Center
B. Scan settings
C. Update settings
D. Advance settings
A. Protection Center - This section is basically the heart & mind of protection. It consists of file, mail, IM, and Web-anti-virus. Additionally, it also has Firewall, System Watcher, Application control, Network attack blocker, Anti-Spam and Anti-Banner modules. I would refrain from talking anything about all these modules, and would rather like to introduce the following new protection modules:
Safe Money – Kaspersky Internet Security offers you to open primarily banking and online shopping sites in safe mode. Thereby, safeguarding your confidential data such as banking card numbers, pin numbers and passwords, for access to online banking services from any theft. In simple words, (if enabled) Kaspersky detects and opens all your banking and online purchase sites in a protected browser.
From the Desktop short-Safe Money, you can quickly access banking websites in protected mode with a single click. The browser opens in protected mode identified with the green border.
Secure Data Input – This module presents you a virtual keyboard thereby providing you secure input from the keyboard directly to shopping or Internet banking sites. It eliminates the risk of interception of your personal information by hardware keyboard interceptors or keyloggers, which are programs that register keystrokes. This way you get a complete peace of mind while typing any confidential on your keyboard.
B. Scan settings – This section is like the blood running in your body. I say this because even with a healthy heart & mind (all modules enabled in Protection Center), blood (scan) is required to keep the body (system) alive. Here you can configure/schedule and set Full/Custom scans as per your need.
The Vulnerability Scan checks for any unprotected portions of software code which intruders may deliberately use for their purposes. It helps you to reveal any such weak points in your computer. On the other hand, Critical areas scan scans the system memory and startup objects. Kaspersky is intelligent enough to perform resource intensive jobs such as rootkit scan, scanning of system memory, startup objects and system-drive when the system is idle.
C. Update settings – Here you can do minimal changes to the definitions update. From 2012 version I found following two major settings missing. This is not a good decision at all.
Rescan Quarantine after update
Copy updates to Folder
Searching on Kaspersky site I came across the following article which talks about “Kaspersky Update Utility 2.0″ for offline update and/or update back up.
The latest version is 188.8.131.52 released 30-AUG-2012 and supports KAV/KIS 184.108.40.20690
D. Advance settings- This section consists of the following settings:
I would like to talk about the following interesting and updated settings:
Parental Control - The complete Parental Control functionality has been enhanced in 2013 version. It now updates the rules of websites checking by categories in the course of databases updating. This ensures a more thorough control of children’s access to websites with inadmissible content with each update. In total there are following 9 settings available for Parental Control.
Gaming Profile - This setting allows you to enjoy optimal system functioning while Kaspersky adjusts its settings in the background with causing any nuances.
Network section - This is another powerful area of Kaspersky. Here you can monitor all/specific ports for protection components: Mail Anti-Virus, Anti-Spam and Web Anti-Virus for the data streams transferred via the selected/all ports of your computer. It consists of pre-defined ports and applications as shown below.
Additionally, it also allows you to scan the encrypted SSL protocol connection. (Connections using the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol protect data exchange channel on the Internet. The SSL protocol allows you to identify the parties exchanging data using electronic certificates, encode the data being transferred, and ensure their integrity during the transfer.)
Manage Settings - Here you can export/import the settings of Kaspersky Internet Security. This is very useful when either you want to use same settings on Kaspersky Internet Security installed on another computer, or take a backup of settings for probably re-installation.
Following are my observations:
1. Easy to install
2. Nice and clean interface with easy navigation.
3. Easy to configure and modify the settings
4. It has detailed reports for every module and this thing was very very useful for me, as I could track each and every thing.
5. Scan speed is fast.
6. Detection is good.
7. The parental control is easy to set for any parent, using the well documented help file.
I would greatly appreciate if Kaspersky could come up with 64-bit specific installers, and an alternate way to update database for offline devices.
Overall Kaspersky had never let me down and have kept my NEW laptop free of any infection. I recommend others to give Kaspersky a try, and then you would realize that I’m not lying on any of the points I have mentioned above. The All-In-One (AIO) Kaspersky ONE Universal Security is not only going to keep your devices trouble free, but also save a lot on your pocket.
