These days every computer user is aware of what firewall’s are but for those who don’t know, A Firewall is a hardware or software which help in keeping a network secure by controlling incoming and outgoing network traffic. Firewall plays an important role in the security of today’s advance computers. Firewall is always a tuff concept to grasp for every normal computer user, but because of its importance in computer security every computer user face it in day today’s life. While it is very hard to learn how to fine tune firewall for best security, there are several programs available out there which can help normal users in tuning firewall for their preferred security level. One of the best in its kind is Windows Firewall Control. It is very easy to install, setup and use. The setup of Windows Firewall Control is 500KB in size so I can say it’s a tiny but very powerful application. After installation it runs in system tray and runs automatically when system starts.

Now let me explain main features of Windows Firewall Control:

The GUI (Graphical User Interface) of Windows Firewall Control is very simple and user friendly. It has five tabs with different set of options. I’ll explain every advance option of these tabs one by one below.

First tab is Profiles: Here user can select filtering of connections as per needs and personal security preferences. It has four filtering options, I’ll explain them below.

  • No Filtering: By selecting this option user can turn off Windows Firewall. Remember that it is not recommend turning off windows firewall without a good reason or even with a good reason for a long time.
  • Low Filtering: By selecting this option user allow all programs with no matching rules to connect outside of firewall. This is the least secure settings of firewall. It allows maximum number of outgoing connections.
  • Medium Filtering: By selecting this option user can block all the outgoing connections which do not matches any rules. It blocks maximum of third party application from connecting outside the firewall. This option provides better security but because it blocks most of the applications user needs to create separate rules for each application.
  • High Filtering: By selecting this option user can block all outgoing connections. Applications with matching rules cannot connect outside of firewall if this option is selected.

 Second tab is Options:  Here user has four options to choose from. I’ll explain them below.

  • Learning Mode: By selecting this option user get notifications of blocked connections. This option only works after program activation.
  • Enable notification for system application: By selecting this option user get notifications of system applications. This option only become available if learning mode option is selected.
  • Shell Integration:  By selecting this option user integrate the program into the context menu of executable files. User has the option to block or allow connection of any program by right clicking on its executable file (setup).
  • Start with Windows: By selecting this option user can set Windows Firewall Control to auto run on every system start.

 Third tab is Policies: Here user has three options to choose from. First is Import Policy, second is Export Policy and third is Restore default. I’ll explain them below.

  • Import Policy: By selecting this option user can import policies to windows firewall which overwrite all the current policies. It is recommended to export current polices first before importing new policies.
  • Export Policy: By selecting this option user can export policies to a policy file (.wfc) on hard disk. User can use his file to restore settings in future.
  • Restore Default: By selecting this option user can restore all the policies to default when windows was installed. This option is only recommend to advance user as after using this options some of the programs may stop working.

 Fourth tab is Shortcuts: Here user has three shortcuts. First is Windows Firewall. Second is Windows Event Viewer and third is Command Prompt. I’ll explain them below.

  • Windows Firewall: By selecting this option user can access windows firewall for advance security directly. User can also access it through control panel.
  • Event Viewer: By selecting this option user can access even viewer directly. User can also access it through Administrative Tools in control panel.
  • Command Prompt: By selecting this option user can access command prompt directly. User can also access it through accessories in start menu.

 Fifth tab is About: Here user can check Program version and activation status. This is the last tab on windows firewall control.

Including these tabs Windows Firewall Controls has some more options. I’ll explain them below.

 It has two buttons on the top right corner of the GUI.

  • By selecting first button user can lock the present configuration of windows firewall control. This option needs a password to function.
  • By selecting second button user can exit windows firewall control. This option needs user confirmation for working.

It has five buttons on the bottom, I’ll explain them below.

  • Manage Rules: By selecting this option user can manage rules of firewall manually.
  • Browse the Program for connecting: By selecting this option user can browse the executable of program that he wants to allow for connecting.
  • Click a program for connecting: By selecting this option user can click on a desired program window to allow it for connecting. It is a very handy option for quick rule building.
  • Browse the program for blocking: By selecting this option user can browse for executable of program that he wants to block from connecting.
  • Click a program for blocking: By selecting this option user can click on a desired program window to block its access form connecting outside the firewall.

Conclusion: Windows firewall control is a powerful firewall control program packed with advance and user friendly options. It is very helpful for most of the computer users as it is very easy to use and can give user full control over outgoing connections. It is also light on system resource and runs in system tray where user can quickly access it. After using it for 5 days I can say I am satisfied with its overall performance. It is reliable tool and user can understand it on first use. I highly recommend it to all computer users, user can try it before making any decision so it costs nothing to try it. I am sure everyone who tries it will find it useful and easy to use.
