[Contest] Bitdefender Windows 8 Security [Forum Exclusive]

| December 12, 2012

Do you rely on external security software and are you looking for one that works well with Windows 8 then Bitdefender Windows 8 Security does a great job. Bitdefender Windows 8 Security integrates nicely to Windows 8 and has a very good detection rate and has caught around 95% of virus/malware thrown at it. I’ve used many anti-virus software and Bitdefender Windows 8 Security seems to do better than the rest I’ve used.

Installation is straight forward and after the installation starts it’ll start scanning while it is downloading and installing Bitdefender. The installation scan does not take long and is quite quick and mostly takes the time for it to finish installing. After installation the service will start and you’ll come up to the main interface where it’ll check what needs your attention.

Bitdefender Windows 8 Security interface is easy to use and features some Windows 8 Modern UI designs. On the main interface you’ll be able to see if there’s a problem you’ll need to fix or if your computer is running fine. In the top middle you’ll have the events where you’ll see what has happened, what it has found, and any info that took place. You’ll also have your settings panel and your profile. On the bottom rows you’ll see the main panels which are Antivirus, Privacy, firewall, update, antispam, ID theft protection and safego. All of the bottom panels have their own settings icon which you can click and configure or click the arrow to open up the panel and initiate the panel you chose like if you chose Anti-virus you’ll be able to initiate a quick scan, system scan, custom scan, vulnerability scan, and rescue mode. Each comes with their own tasks and can be customized to the order of your liking.

Bitdefender Windows 8 Security comes with some nice features that takes advantage of the new features of Windows 8, it’ll integrate to the Windows Security which will keep you notified if something wrong. Bitdefender Windows 8 Security also integrates with Windows 8 new technology of ELAM (Early Launch Anti-Malware) which starts before anything starts so that it can protect it before Malware can start. It is able to scan Windows 8 apps and gives you a warning if any problems persist.

Bitdefender Windows 8 Security runs good with low resources but when running it’ll use around 60-90 MB in resources and around 10 MB when running in the background. You won’t really notice it is running in the background and seems to be quick. Bitdefender also includes a game mode which should activate automatically or you can activate through a shortcut keys when you are going to play a game so that your game does not run slow. The quick scan can take around 3 minutes to complete where system scans can take around 2 hours but it’ll depend on how many files you have.  It’ll select the actions it suggest and if in case you want to review the actions you can go to the events section and see what it found and you can restore or delete from there.

Bitdefender Windows 8 Security has a nice feature which is called Safepay, which if you want to purchase, enter to your bank account, or anything which if you are accessing this on a public place, it comes in handy if you don’t want to worry about hackers trying to access your accounts when banking or shopping. This works by using a separate browser to protect you but also limits you access to other applications. There’s also this option on the browser if you activate the toolbar on the settings panel, after you’ve done that the toolbar is not intrusive and does not take any space. The toolbar lets you see the sites ratings plus you are able to get into a sandbox browser which works pretty well and if in case a malware or an attach tries to get in it won’t go to your system as it’ll be locked in the sandbox browser and after it is closed there won’t be any traces left behind of anything you did on the browser.

Bitdefender settings is easy to maneuver around and you’ll know what it has. The default settings is good enough but if you need to change anything, you’re able to with ease, in general settings is where you’ll be able to activate the game mode shortcut keys, automatic game mode, password protection, and laptop mode, by default only the password and game mode shortcut keys are turned off. You also have settings for each module. You are able to add exclusions or see the quarantine on the Antivirus settings, and in the privacy you are able to activate the Bitdefender toolbar where you are also able to activate the sandbox to use on your browser and if something comes through your system won’t get infected.

Thoughts and Conclusion

Bitdefender Windows 8 Security is a great security software that is one to consider when choosing your security. From the 3 different Anti-Virus software from Norton, Webroot and Bitdefender, Bitdefender has worked better when running and gave no problems where the other two did. Norton closed out or froze, and where Webroot showed lag at times, Bitdefender showed that it can block around 95% off attacks and seems to run without any computer slowdowns.
