This installation of win 10 was great. It took about 5 hours to complete.

Same to me. Windows Update downloaded about 2G files for upgrade. Windows 10 is really nice but I found that it took so long time to restart and login PC. Usually I need 30 seconds to start my laptop when my OS was Windows 7 Ultimate. But now I need more than one minute to start it.
You have to upgrade instead of doing a clean install,is that correct?

Yes you have to first upgrade then you can reset the Windows 10 if you want to start fresh.

Which seems to be the better option on installing the free upgrade then doing a reinstallation of Windows 10 afterward.

Yes, you have to upgrade to 10. Once you have done that, the operating system stores your activation information and your PC's hardware fingerprint in your Microsoft Account.

All you have to do is login after a future clean install, and you are good to go.
Applause for the info
I just upgraded my laptop lastnight to windows 10. It took me 90 minutes.
I never tried this yet.
If your first try to update fails then start with a clean install.
